Plastic: from waste to resource

For Tecnofer, environmental protection is both a strategic choice and a concrete responsibility. Investing in material recovery and recycling technologies means creating value, reducing environmental impact, and offering solutions capable of standing out in an increasingly competitive global market.

In this context, plastic plays a central role. It is an essential material in numerous industrial sectors, but it is also a resource that requires increasingly careful and responsible management throughout its entire life cycle. Understanding the composition of plastics and their characteristics is the first step toward developing effective recovery and recycling processes.

Plastic is made up of a wide range of chemical compounds, often differing from one another and sometimes combined into complex mixtures. The main raw materials used for its production are derived from fossil resources such as oil, natural gas, and coal, whose extraction, transportation, and processing involve high energy consumption and significant environmental impact.

The many possible combinations used in plastic production generate highly heterogeneous materials: polymers, copolymers, and polymer blends with different properties depending on their final applications.

Plastic materials are supplied to processors in the form of pellets, powders, or partially polymerized liquids and are subsequently transformed into finished and semi-finished products through various manufacturing technologies.

Thanks to their flexibility, strength, chemical stability, and low production costs, plastics are now used in a vast number of industrial sectors and everyday products. Precisely because of their widespread use, the proper recovery and recycling of plastic materials plays a fundamental role in reducing waste, enhancing resource value, and promoting a circular economy model.

In the downloadable document available alongside this page, we provide an overview of the main waste materials that can be recovered and valorized through specific recycling processes, accompanied by concrete examples of plants and projects developed by Tecnofer.
