Food loss and waste facts

Every year around the globe 1.3 billion tons of food is lost or wasted, that is a 1/3 of all food produced for human consumption: 53 million tons of meat, 286 million tons of cereals in industrialized countries, 29 million tons of dairy products only in Europe and 45% of harvested fruit and vegetables is “imperfect” food (FAO, 2015).Food losses represent a waste of resources used in production such as land, water, energy and inputs, increasing the green gas emissions in vain. In the mass retail channel sector, it is steadily increasing the attention to food waste and in the different countries, alternative answers to the problem are being elaborated.
