In food supply chain it often happens that products become waste, and this is due to very strict regulations bound to the specific business area. With the Tecnofer depackaging system all of these products, production wastes and unsold/expired products, become a new opportunity of sustainable business.

Food waste separated from its packaging, which might be in plastic, cardboard, aluminium, Tetra Pak, becomes a resource that can be used for feeding anaerobic digestion (AD) plants, compost plants and used by animal feed producers. The materials coming from the packaging could be recycled or sold to a third party.

An increasing amount of wastes in production lines is also found in the beauty sector. A recent study by the Pacakging World Magazine revealed that more than the 80% of manufacturers each year experience increased costs and waste because of mislabelled products or non-compliant packaging.

The depackaging solution fits perfectly into the context. Separating the beauty product from its packaging, companies avoid disposal activities and related costs. At the same time the two separated materials become an important resource to be reused or reinvested in other business areas.

Food Loss and Waste facts!

Every year around the globe 1.3 billion tons of food is lost or wasted, that is a 1/3 of all food produced for human consumption: 53 million tons of meat, 286 million tons of cereals in industrialized countries, 29 million tons of dairy products only in Europe and 45% of harvested fruit and vegetables is “imperfect” food (FAO, 2015). Food losses represent a waste of resources used in production such as land, water, energy and inputs, increasing the green gas emissions in vain.

In the mass retail channel sector, it is steadily increasing the attention to food waste and in the different countries, alternative answers to the problem are being elaborated.
